Best AI video generators in 2026: nine tools compared honestly
Kling, Seedance, Veo, Runway, Pika, Hailuo, Higgsfield, Luma and ReelDouble compared: what each is best at, how it keeps a character, and what it costs.

The short answer
There is no single best AI video generator in 2026. There is a best one for the job you have.
If you want the most realistic human motion per dollar, start with Kling. If you want native dialogue and sound in the same pass, start with Google Veo. If you want editing tools around the generation, Runway. If you want lots of quick social clips cheaply, Pika or Hailuo. If you want one app that hosts many models, Higgsfield. If you want smooth, film-like camera moves, Luma.
And if your videos are stories, where the same character has to show up in scene after scene and episode after episode, that is the problem we built ReelDouble for. We are biased, so we say so up front, and every fact about another tool on this page comes from that tool's own pages or is marked as unconfirmed.
One thing changed this year that a lot of older lists still miss: OpenAI shut Sora down. The app closed in April 2026 and the API followed in September, so it is not on this list as something you can buy.
How we compared them
We looked at four things, because those are the four that decide whether a tool works for short-form video in practice:
- What it is best at. Every one of these is good at something. The question is what.
- How it keeps a character. One great clip is easy now. The same face in clip ten is not.
- How long one generation runs. Most cap a single take at somewhere between 5 and 15 seconds.
- What the cheapest paid plan costs, taken from the official pricing page and dated. Where the official page would not load for us, we say "not confirmed" instead of copying a number from a reseller blog.
Prices were read on 26 October 2026. They move often, so check before you buy.

The tools one by one
Kling
Kling, from Kuaishou, is the tool most creators reach for when they want people to move like people. Hands, walking, turning to camera: it gets those right more often than most. Its Elements feature lets you give it reference images of a character so the same person comes back in a new clip. We use Kling ourselves; inside ReelDouble it runs as Kling O3 Pro, and it is the engine we default to when a character has to hold across shots, and it is tied for the cheapest voiced second we sell.
Where it is weaker: one generation tops out at about 15 seconds, so anything longer is two clips joined, and keeping a character across a whole series still means managing your references by hand.
Seedance
Seedance is ByteDance's video model, available through Dreamina, BytePlus and a number of other apps. Its strength is stable, rich motion and generating picture and sound in one pass, and it accepts image, video and audio references. Inside ReelDouble we run Seedance 2.5, Seedance 2.0 and Seedance 2.0 Fast. Seedance 2.5 is the one we pick for long takes: it renders up to 30 seconds in a single pass and accepts up to thirty reference images.
Where it is weaker: Seedance 2.5 bills the same whether a clip has sound or not, so silent drafts are no cheaper.
Google Veo 3.1
Veo is Google's model, sold through Google AI plans and the Flow app. It is the strongest of the group at native audio: characters can speak, and sound effects land in the same generation. Ingredients to Video lets you hand it up to three reference images to hold a character or a product. Google's AI Plus plan was $9.99 a month and AI Pro $19.99 a month as of 26 October 2026.
Where it is weaker: base clips are 4, 6 or 8 seconds. Longer scenes are built by extending, which gets expensive quickly. We run Veo 3.1 Fast inside ReelDouble for short, clean shots with dialogue.
Runway
Runway is less a single model and more a production suite: generation plus editing, masking and camera controls, built for people who already think like editors. Its cheapest paid plan was $12 a month billed yearly, or $15 month to month, and new accounts get 125 one-time credits.
Where it is weaker: for a creator posting several short story videos a week, you are paying for editing tools you may not use.
Pika
Pika is fast and cheap, and it leans into effects: the playful transformations that do well on social feeds. It now also hosts other companies' models. The entry plan was $10 a month, or $8 billed yearly.
Where it is weaker: its pricing page names no dedicated feature for keeping a character the same across clips.
Hailuo
Hailuo, from MiniMax, is a popular low-cost option with lively, energetic motion and a free tier. Its Subject Reference feature lets you give it a face to hold. We could not load its official pricing page, so we are not quoting a price.
Where it is weaker: free clips are watermarked, and resolution drops as clip length goes up.
Higgsfield
Higgsfield is an app that hosts many models under one roof, with camera-move presets and Soul ID for keeping a person's identity. It is a good fit if you want to try a dozen models without a dozen accounts. We could not confirm its price on its official page.
Where it is weaker: credits on its plans expire, so a slow month costs you.
Luma
Luma's models are known for smooth, deliberate camera moves that feel shot rather than generated. Luma now sells its plans as Luma Agents, bundling other models alongside its own. The cheapest paid plan was $30 a month, or $25 billed yearly, and there was no permanent free tier on the official page.
Where it is weaker: it is the most expensive way in on this list.
ReelDouble
ReelDouble is not a model. It is a studio that runs five of them: Kling O3 Pro, Seedance 2.5, Seedance 2.0, Seedance 2.0 Fast and Veo 3.1 Fast. You describe or upload a character once and lock it with a reference sheet, then every scene of every episode uses that same character, on whichever engine suits the shot. Script, storyboard, batch render, captions and MP4 export are in the same place.
It is built for one kind of video: the 3D animated and anime-style story series with a recurring lead that do so well on TikTok, Reels and Shorts right now. Every account starts with 300 free credits, paid plans run from $10 to $299 a month, and credits never expire. Every render shows its price in credits before you press Generate.
Where it is weaker: if you only ever need one-off clips with no recurring character, a single-model app is simpler.
Which one should you pick?
- One great clip, realistic people: Kling.
- Characters that talk, with sound in the same pass: Veo 3.1.
- You edit for a living: Runway.
- Lots of cheap, fun social clips: Pika or Hailuo.
- You want to try every model in one place: Higgsfield.
- Film-like camera moves: Luma.
- A series with the same character in every scene: ReelDouble.
The last one is the hardest problem on the list, and it is the one that decides whether a story channel grows. Viewers follow a character, not a clip. If you want to see how that works, you can lock your first character in the studio with the free credits and render two short voiced tests before paying anything.
FAQ
What is the best AI video generator in 2026?
It depends on the job. Kling leads on realistic human motion, Google Veo 3.1 on native dialogue and sound, Runway on editing tools, and ReelDouble on story series where the same character appears in every scene.
What is the best AI video generator for consistent characters?
For a recurring character across many scenes and episodes, ReelDouble is built for exactly that: you lock the character once and reuse it on Kling, Seedance and Veo. Single-model tools offer reference features like Kling Elements or Veo Ingredients to Video, which you manage clip by clip.
Is Sora still available?
No. OpenAI shut Sora down in 2026: the app closed in April and the API in September. Creators who used it have mostly moved to Kling, Veo, Seedance or a studio like ReelDouble that runs several of them.
What is the cheapest AI video generator?
As of 26 October 2026, Google AI Plus with Veo started at $9.99 a month, Pika at $8 a month billed yearly, and ReelDouble at $10 a month with a free account of 300 credits. Prices change often, so check each pricing page.
Can I use Kling, Seedance and Veo in one place?
Yes. ReelDouble runs Kling O3 Pro, Seedance 2.5, Seedance 2.0, Seedance 2.0 Fast and Veo 3.1 Fast in one studio, so you can pick a different engine for each scene and keep the same character across all of them.
