Hailuo alternative for story videos: a saved cast that carries into Part 2

When one Hailuo reference image is not enough for a series: reference slots per engine, a cast that returns in every part, and the credits for an 8-second scene.

What page 1 gives you

Search "Hailuo alternative" and the first page is mostly other vendors' lists. LTX Studio's list is published by LTX Studio. Morphic's is published by Morphic. Below them sit directories like topai.tools and aitoolsatlas, which list dozens of tools with a line each. One comparison page from a Seedance reseller scores Hailuo's character consistency at 80 to 85% against 95% for Seedance; that is the reseller's own test, with no method shown, so we do not repeat it as a fact.

We are a vendor too. What we can add is narrower: what a story series needs from a character tool, what we read about Hailuo's reference feature on 7 November 2026, and what the same job costs on our shelf, from the rate file the studio bills from.

What Hailuo's reference does, from what we read

Hailuo is MiniMax's video model and app. Its character feature is a subject reference: you upload a photo, and the render keeps that face. The guides we read on 7 November 2026, from focalml, WeShop and ImagineArt, all describe it as one subject reference image, and one older guide says the reference opened first for a single character. We found no official MiniMax page stating a number, and one comparison page claims Hailuo takes no reference image at all, which contradicts the rest. So treat "one face per shot" as what the sources describe, and check the live app before you decide.

We do not run Hailuo in our studio, and we did not test its motion or its faces, so this page makes no quality claim about either.

When one reference is enough

If your videos are single clips with one person in them, a single subject reference may be all you need. A talking head, a product demo with one presenter, a one-off meme: none of them have to remember anything from last week. If that is your work and Hailuo does it well for you, stay.

What a series asks for that a single clip does not

A story series is a different job. Over ten parts, these are the things that break first:

Two or more characters in one shot. The moment a second person enters the frame, one reference slot is a problem. The second face gets invented from the text, and invented faces change between renders.

The same order every time. If the hero is reference one in Part 1, she has to be reference one in Part 6, or the prompt that says "the woman on the left" starts pointing at the wrong person.

A voice that comes back. If the character speaks in Part 1, the same voice has to speak in Part 9.

A known price per scene. A series is a budget, and a budget needs a rate per second you can multiply.

How our studio handles the same job

In ReelDouble a character is built once: a reference sheet (30 credits), a written descriptor, and a voice. The voice can be one from our bank, which is free, or a clone of your own voice for 50 credits, made once and reused on every render. Every part of a series reuses the character in the same reference order, so the hero is @Image1 on Seedance or @Element1 on Kling in every episode.

The engine is chosen per shot. Each one holds a different number of references:

enginereferences in one shotlengths720p voiced / silent, credits per second
Seedance 2.530 images4 to 30 s, one take70 / 70
Seedance 2.09 images4 to 15 s45 / 45
Seedance 2.0 Fast9 images4 to 15 s50 / 50
Kling O3 Pro5 characters as elements4 to 30 s, 15 s per generation30 / 24
Veo 3.1 Fast3 images4, 6 or 8 s30 / 20

Seedance 2.5 also renders 480p at 35 credits a second and 1080p at 130. Seedance 2.0 renders 480p at 22 and 1080p at 70. Veo 3.1 Fast bills 1080p at the 720p rate. Kling O3 Pro is 720p only. Seedance bills the same with or without sound, which is why its two numbers match.

When a shot names more characters than the chosen engine takes, the studio refuses the render with a line that names the engine's limit and the engine on the shelf with room. Three characters on Kling go through. Six get sent to Seedance 2.5. A render that quietly drops a character costs a full retake, so we would rather stop it at the button.

Veo is a special case worth knowing: with references attached it always renders 8 seconds and bills 8, whatever length you ask for. For a 4-second beat with a character, Kling at 120 voiced is cheaper.

Three parts of a two-character series

Here is a short series priced the way we would build it. Each part is 24 seconds: a 12-second dialogue scene and a 4-second button on Kling O3 Pro, voiced, and an 8-second reaction on Veo 3.1 Fast with references.

Exports are free from the Creator plan up, which takes that last line to zero. Bank voices are free, so the table has no voice line; cloning your own voice would add 50 per character, once. Retakes are not in the table, and they are real: a shot that comes back wrong costs its full price again.

A new account starts with 600 credits. That covers the two sheets and a silent pass of Part 1 (Kling 12 s silent at 288, Veo 8 s silent at 160), 508 in all, with 92 left to fix a line.

Where Hailuo is the better pick

  • Single-subject clips. If every video has one face and no sequel, the series machinery above is overhead.
  • You already pay for it. Use what you have before adding a second subscription.
  • You like its motion. We did not test it, so we will not argue with your eyes.
  • If the sources are out of date. If Hailuo now takes several references with a fixed order, the main gap on this page closes. Check the live app.

Where we are the better pick

  • A cast that returns. Up to 30 references in one Seedance 2.5 shot, or five characters on Kling, with the same reference order in every part.
  • Mixed engines on one meter. Kling for dialogue, Veo for an 8-second beat, Seedance 2.5 for the crowd scene, all priced in the same credit.
  • The price before the render. Every engine, length and resolution is quoted from one rate file, and a combination an engine cannot serve shows no price at all.
  • Credits that do not expire. Nothing you pay for on ReelDouble has an end date, which matters when a series runs for months.

If your work is the series kind, build the two characters in the studio and price Part 1 shot by shot before you render a frame. For the Part 2 workflow itself, see AI story video Part 2, and for another alternatives page written the same way, the Higgsfield alternative.

FAQ

What is a good Hailuo alternative for consistent characters?

For a series where the same characters return every episode, ReelDouble builds each character once and renders them on Kling O3 Pro, Seedance 2.5, Seedance 2.0 or Veo 3.1 Fast. Seedance 2.5 holds up to 30 references in one shot and Kling holds five characters.

How many reference images does Hailuo take?

Guides we read on 7 November 2026 describe Hailuo's subject reference as one image, and we found no official MiniMax number. One comparison page says it takes none, which conflicts with the others, so check the current Hailuo app before planning a multi-character shot.

Can I put two characters in one AI video shot?

Yes, on an engine with enough reference slots. On ReelDouble, Kling O3 Pro takes five characters, Seedance 2.0 takes nine images, Seedance 2.5 takes thirty and Veo 3.1 Fast takes three. An 8-second two-character shot on Kling is 240 credits voiced.

How much does a short AI story series cost?

On ReelDouble, three 24-second parts with two characters, built from Kling O3 Pro and Veo 3.1 Fast shots, come to 2,280 credits including two reference sheets and three exports. Retakes are extra, and each one costs the shot's full price again.

Does Hailuo keep the same character in Part 2?

We did not test Hailuo, so we cannot say. In ReelDouble the character, its reference sheet and its voice are saved once, and every later part reuses them in the same reference order, so the hero is the same reference token in every episode.
